The Story
The Moulin Rouge opened in 1889 and became the best-known café-concert in Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec had a permanently reserved table there.
This is a group portrait of the regulars and performers, several of them notorious, arranged around a table with the artist himself among the figures at the back. The green-lit face at the right edge was added later and cut about; the painting was at one point trimmed and then reassembled.
