The Story

Five sheets that make one image: women gathering shellfish and sea life on a beach at low tide. These are surimono — privately commissioned prints, made outside the commercial trade for a poetry group rather than for sale.

Ten poems run along the top of the composition. All but one contain the words 'low tide'; the odd one out describes abalone as a jewel worth hunting for. Printed around 1830.
