The Story

One of three triptychs Hiroshige made late in his career on the theme of setsugekka — snow, moon and flowers. This is the moon: an autumn night over Kanazawa, the coastline running back in a wide panorama dotted with villages, fishing boats and a distinctive double-arched bridge.

Made in 1857, the year before he died. His contemporaries would have known the view immediately.
