Ichikawa Danjūrō VII as Kan Shōjō

The actor plays an exiled statesman at the moment he turns into a vengeful thunder god. The red-and-white face paint is kumadori — 'shadow painting' — used for heroic roles in the aragoto style. The crossed eyes and clenched mouth are a mie, the held pose kabuki actors strike at the peak of a scene, borrowed from the stylised movement of Bunraku puppets. Audiences applauded the holding of it.

Printed in 1814 with mica, which gives the ground a physical glitter.
