The Story

From One Hundred Ghost Tales. Kohada Koheiji was a kabuki actor drowned by his wife's lover, who came back to haunt them both. Here the skeleton pulls down the edge of a mosquito net and looks in at the sleeping couple. The skull is drawn with real anatomical attention and the expression on it is close to amused.

Hokusai apparently intended a full hundred designs. Five were published. The Art Institute holds one of the best-preserved sets of them.
