The Story

A mountain pass on the Tōkaidō, and a stone in the foreground that is said to weep. The legend is that bandits murdered a pregnant woman on this stretch of road and her blood fell on the rock, which took in her spirit. In some tellings the stone's crying alerts a passing monk — the bodhisattva Kannon in disguise — to her infant, who survived. He takes the child and raises it.

Travellers on the path give the stone a wide berth. From the series collectors call the Formal Script Tōkaidō, after the style of lettering used for the title.
