Poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro

The same series, the same joke. Hitomaro, writing around the year 700, asked whether he must sleep alone through autumn nights as long as the dragging tail of a mountain pheasant parted from its mate.

The nurse hears a long dragging thing and thinks of fishermen hauling nets. So the print shows hard physical work at the shoreline where the poem meant an exhausted, solitary night. Signed Zen Hokusai, with the manji seal he used late in life.
