The Story

A study for the figure of Eugène Lamy, who appears in conversation with Caillebotte himself in a painting of the Seine at Petit Gennevilliers made the same year. Quick diagonal marks record where the light falls on the jacket and nothing else is resolved.

Lamy and Caillebotte were both keen sailors and the artist's house was near a popular club at Argenteuil. Drawn in 1893, on Arches paper.
