The Story

Published in 1857, two years after the earthquake and fire that levelled much of Edo, and showing the Great Bridge over the Sumida newly rebuilt. People cross in both directions with their heads down, holding matting and umbrellas over themselves. The Atake bank sits behind, nearly dissolved by the rain.

This is the print Van Gogh copied in oil in 1887. He kept the vertical rain and the flat bands of colour, and put a border of Japanese characters around it that he copied from an unrelated source.
