The Story

The lithograph, not the painting — Munch printed the image in black ink in 1895, two years after the first painted version, and it is the print that carried it around the world.

He cut a line into the stone beneath it: 'Ich fühlte das grosse Geschrei durch die Natur' — I felt the great scream through nature. The German is there because he was working in Berlin. Signed in pencil at the lower right.
