Woman Putting Out a Light

A woman leans in to extinguish a lamp, from a series titled Modern Customs: Frost Beneath the Stars. Kunisada's subject was the fashionable world of Edo and the way it dressed, and the whole print turns on the cloth.

The collar of her under-robe carries a painted signature — Gototei, the secondary name Kunisada was using around 1820. He signed the garment inside the picture as well as the sheet.
