The Story
Guilbert was one of the biggest cabaret performers in Paris and the subject of a great deal of Toulouse-Lautrec's work. Her act was built around a pair of very long black gloves.
This is him working out a poster she had commissioned to advertise her season at Les Ambassadeurs. A more finished version survives in Albi. The poster was never printed: Guilbert saw the design and rejected it as unflattering.
