About this work

One building is left standing, and the ground around it is open and under snow. The tenement is orange against cold blue-grey water; the only other warm note is a smokestack building far off at upper left. The underside of a bridge runs as a dark band across the whole top edge.

The record dates it to December 1909, and the oil painting is held by the National Gallery of Art; what ships is a reproduction of it. George Bellows died in 1925, so the work is out of copyright: no royalty is owed on it and none is paid. The file runs 10,481 pixels on its long edge, which is about 133 centimetres at 200 DPI, and the ladder stops at 75 x 100 cm with room to spare.
