The sun is low and behind them, so each animal is a warm dark mass inside a halo of lit hair, and the frost along their backs takes that light as a white line. The largest stands nearest, head down, its breath hanging to the right of its muzzle. A conifer slope and frosted sagebrush go soft behind the herd in ice fog.
