Stand back a metre and pan slowly — even light helps
Three registers stack up the frame. Cloud fills the lower half, a thin pale blue line of airglow rests on the horizon above it, and a dark gap separates both from the aurora. The green band has a soft top edge that dissolves into black and a hard lower edge broken into blunt vertical fingers.
The exposure explains the surface. A 50 mm lens wide open at f/1.2 and a sensor pushed to ISO 51200 are what recorded it, and the cost of that setting is grain, over everything and inside the brightest green. NASA Johnson Space Center catalogued the frame, made 269 miles up on 15 November 2024. A US federal government work carries no copyright, so no royalty is owed on this print and none is paid.
